|  | Gosh! Have I neglected this site for so long. Anyway, here are the pictures from my vacation last summer. I spent a week in Iloilo visiting my relatives and help out with a couple of transactions with my dad. This set of photos are linked up to my flickr site. |  | I still haven't had the chance to scan my Mom's pictures. I actually have a scanner now which my sister handed down to me after she got a newer one, but the installation disc is missing. I still am waiting for her to look for it otherwise I will just have to puchase it online at HP. But this set I took off of my camera didn't turn out bad after all. My mommy, Nora Cordova(nee Almirez), on her Junior(1-19-1957) and Graduation(1-11-1959) Recitals at the Philippine Women's University(PWU). The Manila Chronicle had an article on her graduation recital, dated Fri., January 9, 1959: "Nora Almirez y de la Vega, pianist, will be presented by the Philippine Women's University college of music and arts at a graduation recital for the degree of bachelor of music on Sunday, January 11, at 5:30 p.m. at the PWU concert hall. A pupil of Montserrat Villavicencio-Joven, the recitalist is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Getulio D. Almirez of La Paz Iloilo. Miss Almirez's complete repertoire includes: Bach's English Suite No. 2 in A minor; MacDowells's Sonata Tragica in G minor, Op. 45; Song Without Words, an original composition by the recitalist; La Cathedrale engloutie by Debussy; Bartok's Roumanian Dance Op. 8a, No. 2; and the Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 by Schumann. Nobleza G. Pilar will play the orchestral accompaniment to the Schumann Concerto at a second piano."
*update: I finally got my brother-in-law to fix my scanner. The only thing is it's a desktop scanner so I couldn't get the hardbound album to scan through. Instead I edited the pictures on this set using a Kodak Easyshare Software to give them an authentic sepia tone. The other version can be viewed in my flickr account under my screen name, wilnora. |

I've been busy with work and spending time with family that I have neglected my account. I'm actually more into updating my flickr account than anything else these days. So far I have over 3, 000 pictures posted. Someone rang the doorbell in the middle of the day, but I didn't bother answering it. I thought it was one of those pesky solicitors trying to sell something. Plus I was busy digging up photos I have yet to scan to post up on my flickr account. This is the second time I've redeemed my reward points from thankyounetwork.com. The first one was a coach purse I gave to my sister for her birthday. I'm setting my eyes on a Huffy bike. I need 9, 000 more points to redeem it. I'm probably going to get the bike by the end of the year. |  | The feeling of urgency to seriously take my license as a health practioner really kicked in as I watched my sister's graduation this morning. I've put off the test for so long it's really ridiculous how much time I've wasted. I didn't pay off almost 10k of my student loan and just watch it go down the drain, and be miserable with whatever job I'm doing at the moment. My sister, Pamela Davis graduated from UNLV today with a Bachelor's Degree in Child Psychology. She'll eventually take her master's in the near future, but for now just trying to take some time off with her husband and start a family. I'm really proud of her accomplishments. She's such a driven individual. This is the same sister who would always take over my turn with piano lessons with my mom when we were little because I didn't have the passion for it; over time she possessed the gift of playing any songs on the piano by ear. She definitely excelled in highschool. Up to this day when we meet folks who attended Valley High from year '92-94 they always mention my sister being a great hip-hop dancer and singer. She's quite a linguist as well. Aside from two filipino dialects, & english she's also fluent in spanish & french. She was going to be a french teacher before deciding to become a Psychologist. I have to thank her for translating the whole time we visited Paris in 2002, & for teaching me some french phrases. I sometimes use it when trying to explain something to our french-speaking guests at work. I'm very proud of my little sister! She'll definitely do great in her work. |

I can distinctly remember seeing Dunkin' Donuts in one of the 7-eleven stores near my house last year. I went back to buy a gallon of milk not long ago and saw that they no longer sell it. I was devastated for sure! Someone from work brought in cases of Krispy Kreme donuts at the beginning of the year for potluck and I wish I was rather eating the glazed ones from Dunkin. You see, back in Iloilo I would frequently go to the one on Iznart St with a couple of my friends after school and gorge ourselves to the yummy treat. I'm not a big fan of jelly or creme-filled donuts, but I'd make an exception when it comes to the Dunkin' brand. I especially liked the bavarian kreme growing up. There's a couple of Asian owned donut shops near my house that I'd rather go to than Krispy Kreme. There was a story on the newspaper today about franchising 62 Dunkin' Donuts stores here in Las Vegas for the next 7 years. The first store they're going to open is in August at Silverado Ranch Blvd. & Bermuda Rd. Quite a ways from my house, but I will surely not mind driving over to once it operates. It's actually near my sister's house, so she'll be getting the donuts from me come Football Season when we gather up every Sunday at their house. This makes me really happy! I'll see about talking my brother-in-law to open one since he's planning of opening a food business.

 A recent trip to the beach made me think of a way to make money off of a material I have in possession. Or at least maybe have a group of people start a way of marketing this certain material. Typically, "banig" are used as sleeping mats, but I thought of using it as my beach mat as opposed to the regular towel mats they sell at dept. stores when I bought it in Talipapa at Boracay for $0.99. I was rolling it up since I was done sunbathing when this woman approached me. She had been eyeing my "banig" the whole time I was laying down. She said she grew up in Belize & had the same mat. She thought I bought it around town in Carlsbad. Of course I told her the whole story & suggested to maybe check it out in Mexico, since it's hours away from there and I was sure they use the same buri mat for sleeping. I felt like a dumb-ass when I walked away. I thought what a way to educate Philippine Art & Culture. I didn't even suggest to check out the Filipino stores they might have around town to see if they carry the material. I'm proposing an idea for some of you Filipinos out there who might know of a way to market the mats. And to think they come in all shapes & sizes. |  | I took 2 extra days off this week to spend time w/ most of my nephews & nieces on their spring break from school. We went to Carlsbad, CA for 5 days, rented a house by the ocean and took side trips to neighboring San Diego, and bought siopao that has a similar taste like the one at KongKee in Iloilo, Red Ribbon choco mocha cake( yum!) in L.A. We were going to eat batchoy at Ilonggo Delicacies, but we were strapped for time plus the traffic was so bad coming back to Vegas. It took us 5 hours to get back last night w/ only one pit stop. |

Today marks my Mom's 8th year death anniversary. I thought I could visit her gravesite , but I worked all day long. I might just have to go tomorrow instead since I get off at 5:30 pm. My family & I would usually celebrate the day by going out to dinner, but because of conflicting work schedule we decided to celebrate it this past Sunday. While waiting for our food to come my sister, Fatima & Larry announced they have a little one coming! It's only been a month that Manay Ting found out she's pregnant, so hopefully everything goes well. The first two trimester are the most critical ones so we're watching her and making sure she's not doing any strenous work. I spent my days off at their house to babysit little Lance. I get a kick hanging out with him, but boy does he have a bad temper! He kicks, hits, rolls his eyes at you when he's scolded. I'm pretty sure he'll grow out of it soon. more here

Kasi hindi ako pinayagan ng Mommy dahil daw ang dami ng tao na nagsalubay sa kanya at baka daw masasagaan pa ako. I followed her shows especially yung afternoon show niya na "O.K. Sha" w/ Tony Carreon, The Sharon Cuneta Show w/ Joey de Leon as co-host, hanggang nag move ako dito sa LV. Pag may time nga nagre-renta ako sa store para ma panuod yung movies niya. Day 1
Tues., 9/12
I woke up at 9:30 am, grabbed a quick breakfast and pretty much double checked everything I needed to take for the trip. By 11:30 am I got the unfortunate news from my Asst. Mgr. that she denied a couple of days off I requested so I can extend my stay in Iloilo City. I was a bit pissed & annoyed about it, but what can you do? I just focused on the good stuff the rest of the day like finally being able to go home again after three years, & seeing my relatives and few friends that are still living in the city. I left the house at 4 pm, went to the bank to deposit a check, and headed off to the airport. The traffic wasn't so bad so I was able to pull up to Terminal 2 at McCarran Airport by 4:50 pm. My sister, Socorro was already at the airport w/ her teary-eyed self. This was her first vacation w/o her kids & hubby so she was a bit emotional. We waited about half an hour for my sister, Fatima & nephew, Lance to arrive at the airport. We instantly checked-in our baggages as soon as they came. It took a little while for things to get squared away at the counter since my sis, Fatima accidentally put in the wrong date for her domestic flight connections in the PI when she booked it online. She totally forgot about the time difference when she booked it. She was told to rebook her domestic connection when we arrive in Manila. We were all hungry when we got to the gate so we grabbed a couple of snadwiches to eat while waiting. Lance & I had pepperoni pizza while my sisters shared the turkey sandwich I bought from the concession stand. Lance entertained us with his many funny faces. So cute & so hilarious! We had to stop over an hour in Vancouver to change crew & pick up more passengers going to PI. Lance pretty much did his own thing and watched his Spiderman movie when he's not playing his gameboy while we were in Vancouver. I on the otherhand was trying to study my notes, but had a hard time concentrating since my sisters kept on talking. Thank God the flight wasn't full. Fatima & Lance moved to the first two empty seats in front of us since there was more leg room, while Socorro & I shared our row to lie down. It wasn't comfortable, but at least I had six hours of sleep. I only woke up when it was time for tsibogan! hehehe.
Day 2
Thurs., 9/14
With pretty much the whole day gone because of the time difference we were able to arrive in Manila 45 minutes ahead of the scheduled arrival time of 4:30 am. First thing we did was run downstairs to the info booth to ask for the PAL ticketing office to take care of Fatima & Lance's connecting flights. I feel so bad coz she had to spend $80 more for all the trouble. Our connecting flight to Iloilo wasn't until 10:20 am. We could've easily got on some of the available connecting flights earlier that morning, but we had to pay more so we toughened it out & waited until we boarded at 10:20 am( pic above). Lance got cranky for an hour, but pretty soon was ok when Fatima blew up the balloon his dad packed in his backpack. Him & I played catch w/ it the rest of the time we were there. It didn't take long for him to take a 45 min. nap when we finally got on the plane. Poor kid! He's such a trooper though.
My Aunts Sonny & Alberta, Manang Fely, & cousin Tess picked us up at the airport. We went straight to my cousin Tess's house in Villa Carolina to avoid traffic going to Lapuz & had take out lunch from Tatoy's Manokan. I took a shower before contacting Adelfa's house to let her know I was in town. She had just left to pick up her father in St. Paul's Hospital since it was his release day from a major surgery he had a few days prior when I called her house. I was going to go by myself to downtown Iloilo & start off w/ getting stuff to take home, but ended up passing out on the couch. I woke at 7 pm since we were to go to Lapaz to see other cousins & possibly eat authentic Lapaz Batchoy. By the time we got to Lapaz it was late for batchoy so we decided to go to Chowking for halo-halo instead. We went back to Villa Carolina to get our luggages to take to Lapuz. I passed out in my bed as soon as we got in.
Day 3
Fri., 9/15
Although I only got about three hours of sleep since I was still adjusting to the time difference, & w/ the loud church bell ringing, & rooster crowing at the break of dawn. I instead took pictures of the neighborhood from the balcony and started to at least unpack my luggage. Fatima woke up early as well & started cooking breakfast. We had sumanlatik & ibos at breakfast. So yummy!!! I left the house at 9 am to mail a couple of postcards, & buy pasalubongs. I didn't get a chance to take pictures of the downtown area on my previous trips. I did just that this time after hours of searching for an ilonggo recipe book my sister Chiarina is asking me to buy to no avail in a couple of bookstores along JM Basa St.; I bought her a filipino recipe book at National Bookstore on my last trip, but wasn't satisfied w/ it since the recipes are lutong tagalog. A few months ago I read about the proposal of a restoration of Calle Real on this site, www.exploreiloilo.com. I totally agree with revitalizing the economy on the establishments along this historical streets & preserving heritage buildings. My Mom had chinese-filipino piano students who lived in these buildings. I loved going with her on her piano lessons coz it was guaranteed that I'd have a yummy snack in some of the restaurants along Calle Real afterwards. If I'm not mistaken the Tans occupied the second floor above The Commoner Inc. at the Celso Ledesma Building. Or was it the textile shop next door? I remember looking out of their window & watch the busy street of Calle Real while my mom teaches Ting-Ting Tan new piano pieces. The house was always dark & Ting-Ting had a cat I never knew the name. The other piano student was Mrs. Te who lived across from the Socorro Drug Building. I'm not sure of the name of her appliance store, but she used to give Mom kitchen supplies during Christmas. Mom would have her lessons with her on Sundays. Mrs. Te had this shrine next to the entrance door that was never out of chinese offerings like citrus fruits, some kind of bun & the incense never seem to burn out everytime I come over. I liked it when she would turn on her tv while I'm waiting coz there's always funny kung fu movies. And they have their chinese variety show as well.

I finally got a hold of Adelfa and made plans of meeting up at night. I've forgotten that John, her husband, took a fmla from work at Harrah's in NJ when they found out about Tito's condition. I wasn't able to pack up my pasalubong for him when they picked me up at the house. We went straight to Juvy's house in Tanza Baybay so we can all go to dinner. I was able to meet her husband, Richard before going to work at Freddy's in Sarabia Manor. We planned of stopping by at his bar later that night to catch up some more. I cracked up the whole time coz I've forgotten how funny Juvy could be. It's been six years since we last saw each other, & it was a brief time spent w/ her that time. Grabe gid iya hakos sa akon kag miga-miga ya gid ko kuno kay hinatagan ko sya mga gamit. Hehehe! We went to Krua Thai(picture above) for dinner. Apparently Smallville in Mandurriao is the "it" place in Iloilo. There's a bunch of concerts & such happening in this place all the time. But we skipped checking out the place since it rained the whole time we were there, & moved to Freddy's to catch up with Richard, & have our free drinks. We went back to Smallville to listen to a band at MO2 later that night. We didn't stay very long coz Adelfa's Tatay caught a fever. We all decided to meet up the next day to do some more damage.
